When The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker launched in 2003, its iconic cel-shading art style divided fans. However, over the years it has gained a following, especially among those nostalgic for the GameCube classic.
Now, a Zelda fan is completely recreating Hyrule in this art style. Wind Waker: Unflooded is a 3D modeling project that, as the name suggests, removes all water from the Wind Waker map. This gives project creator Joe Kendrick room to create iconic locations in Hyrule, using the base game's aesthetic – and the results look fantastic.
Wind Waker: Unflooded Shares Progress Update New Year
The project is about 65% complete and there is a lot to show off
In a video shared on January 1st, Kendrick talks to us about how the project came about. Here, we also take a look at how Hyrule is being reimagined with Wind Waker's aesthetic, showing it all in a new light.
We see many locations and areas being developed, but one of the most eye-catching is actually from a piece of concept art for Wind Waker. As it turns out, the developers considered an island shaped like a game cube, but this never made it into the final game. Now, Wind Waker: Unflooded hints at this a bit with a sculpture of a gaming cube on a mountain.
There are a bunch of other videos on the channel that you can check out if you want to see more locations on the map. It is a huge task that takes several years and collects the work of a group of contributors. If you're a Wind Waker fan, or even just a fan of the series in general who want to see what Hyrule would look like on a map, it's worth checking out.
