Since Naruto Set in a fictional world, the holiday it celebrates is a (more) fictional version of Christmas that revolves around the Rin Festival, a winter holiday celebration in Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf Village). Originally a time to pray for the deceased, the Rin Festival has evolved into a holiday where friends and loved ones exchange gifts. The timing of this episode was released during the Christmas season (it actually premiered in Japan on December 25th, 2010) which was more than perfect timing.

In the special – titled Christmas Last chance for love! (which is the first half of episode 39 of the spin-off series Rock Lee and his ninja friends) – Naruto and his friends celebrate this festival by participating in various activities and reflecting on the importance of family and friendship. Part of the spin-off series, this episode focuses primarily on Lee and his friends. Fans will be happy to see Naruto actually make an appearance (and it plays a major role compared to the other appearances he makes in the show).

The special contest (which only lasts about 15 minutes) involves all the kids competing to finish a race to be the first to pick a gift from the White Elephant Gift Exchange. As predicted, Naruto and Rock Lee both want Sakura's gift (while Hinata wants Naruto's). Along the way, most of them find themselves in traps where they have to decide whether to continue the race or stay behind and help someone who has no plans for Christmas. In the end, everyone learns a lesson about the true meaning of Christmas (although, as predicted, the birth of a specific savior is not part of the message).

Like most spin-offs, the holiday special is a stand-alone story whose place in the main series is debatable (although Sasuke isn't in it, so the odds of it happening over the course of the series are pretty good. Shippoden parts). It's even cheerful enough that people unfamiliar with the franchise can watch it and understand the premise. Is it necessary to watch the holidays? Uh… probably not. It is unlikely to be replaced A Charlie Brown Christmas or Frosty the snowman Soon, given the rarity of holiday specials for anime shows (and the short length), this is an easy watch for the holiday season.
