WA, Crime: Police investigating if human remains linked to bizarre sea rescue north of Perth

A man remains under police guard after a body was found in a burnt-out car before a bizarre sea rescue north of Perth.

Officers located the vehicle ablaze on Indian Ocean Drive at Jurien Bay, 200km north of Perth, shortly after midnight on Monday.

Following further investigations, police identified what they believed to be human remains inside the vehicle the following morning.

Police are investigating whether the incident is linked to a sea rescue officers were called to later that afternoon off Cervantes Jetty.

On arrival, police found a vehicle submerged in the water while another vessel was spotted drifting out to sea with a man on-board.

The man was acting erratically and jumped into the water before being rescued soon after by a nearby fishing vessel.

The man, aged in his 20s, remained in police custody on Wednesday and was assisting police with their investigation.

Both vehicles were recovered by investigators and were being forensically examined after being relocated to the Perth area.

In a statement, police said “nothing suspicious” had been located inside the submerged vehicle returned from the ocean.

Police were also seeking dashcam footage from vehicles travelling in both directions along Indian Ocean Drive from 9pm-12.30am on September 25.
