Dragon Age: The Veilguard will not be the direct sequel that many fans were hoping for after Dragon Age: Inquisition. Instead, BioWare has explained that very few choices are being made (three, to be exact), so that The Veilguard can focus on its own story and characters. As Trick Weeks, one of The Veilguard's lead writers, explains, “there will be things that reward returning players who remember the story”. While this keeps things pretty vague, it shows that The Veilguard isn't leaving its old fans behind, even as it tries to be as accessible to newcomers as possible.

“You can come in without having played a Dragon Age game before (or messed with any of the draw stuff) and be fine,” Weeks says. “There are things that reward returning players who remember, but love, this story [Dragon Age: Inquisition] In itself, it is intended to be friendly to new players.
They add that anything that requires prior knowledge will be explained to new players, possibly referring to returning characters like Solas, Varric, and Morrigan. However, these expressions leave the possibility for long-time fans to receive some kind of reward for their dedication all these years – we'll just have to wait and see what that is.
The answer is obviously the characters or the answer to our previous decisions, but we already know that this will be largely impossible, and not that impressive. Veilguard is doing away with the world government system and only asks you to enter three decisions made in the Inquisition: the fate of the Inquisition, what your Inquisitor intends to do with Solas, and who he has romanced. This means there are no decisions we can import from Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2, and it rules out many items and references because they rely on player choice.
Since two of the three questions we're asked are related to Solas, dire wolf fans will be in for a treat. It's possible that some closure on his arc is what's being hinted at here as it will have more of an impact on the returning players.
It remains to be seen how this will play out, but we won't have to wait much longer. Dragon Age: The Veilguard launches on October 31st.
