Reddit user Vectormus casually asked Microsoft or Xbox when they started providing Kinect devices to Walmart for security purposes. The fan posted a photo of a Kinect hanging from above, similar to a CCTV camera. As user TheMicroburst points out, Walmart seems to have been doing this since early 2013. Interestingly, the use of this system is not entirely new, and one airport has already used Xbox Kinect for surveillance. One fan commented that it could be cheaper to do this, as units like these sell for around $20 or less at GameStop.
How to use Kinect for other purposes
A common sentiment in the comments section is that Kinect has found better success as a non-gaming tool than it was originally intended for.
