Finally, Emilia noticed him and let him rest on her feet. Part 15 of Answer: Zero He had some tearful moments. One of the most impressive moments was without a doubt the last moments of Rome. After facing various hardships and dying several times, Subaru was unable to continue and regressed into a shell of a human.

Throughout his condition, he was cared for by Rome, who nonetheless believed in him, but even that ray of light was extinguished by members of the Witch Cult who attacked their carriage and killed him. With his last breath, Rem told Subaru to live, and it was incredibly sad and heartbreaking—watching Rem die in his hands.

After dying and coming back from death many times, Subaru suffered various types of emotional turmoil as the accumulated deaths took their toll on him. However, while his overall mental prowess had improved, he was still very prone to failure, especially in cases where returning with death could not save everyone.

After going through various scenarios and being unable to save Rome, Subaru willingly gave up his life, which in itself was very sad. However, by the time Death Return brought him back, Rome had already been forgotten, meaning there was nothing Subaru could do. Lying next to Roma, Subaru kindly told Emilia to look away and she started purring, and it was a very tearful moment.

5 “Rome? Is that a name I should know?”

Season 2 Episode 1

After dying and returning countless times, Subaru finally manages to defeat Petlegius Romane-Conti and save everyone, including himself. All was going well until he mentioned Rome's name to Emilia and the half-elf asked if she knew who he was. This moment broke Subaru and led the fans to a devastating conclusion. It was revealed that Subaru had to return with death once more after all. The perfect scenario wasn't so great anymore.

Unfortunately, while Subaru was fighting Petalgeus, Archbishop Gluttony Sin had arrived in Rome and left him in a coma. Meanwhile, with his special ability, everyone's memories of Rome were erased except for Subaru.

6 “I hate myself.”

With all that said, commonly known as the “I hate myself speech”, Subaru's heroic speech about being self-deprecating is one of the saddest in anime. Throughout his speech, Subaru talked about all the things he hated about himself, especially his inability to change and the fact that he willingly brought it upon himself, even in his past life.

In his epic but deeply moving speech, Subaru also talked about how, despite being unable to do anything, he wanted everything, even though he hadn't done anything to deserve it. After Subaru announced that he was giving up, this whole grudge started and Rome said that it was easy to give up. Unfortunately for Subaru, it wasn't, but that wasn't something he was allowed to explain.
