The creator of Minecraft has already given up on a spiritual sequel

summary

  • Minecraft creator Notch announced a week ago that he is considering making a spiritual sequel to Minecraft.

  • Less than a week later, he went through the plans and confirmed that his team was focusing on the levers and chest.

  • Notch argued that the results were not as skewed towards a sequel as he had thought, and that this was a “sadly nostalgic revelation”.

Less than a week after announcing his intention to create a spiritual successor to Minecraft, Notch has put those plans on hold indefinitely to focus on Levers and Chests.

Ever since Minecraft first launched as Cave Game in 2009, it has established itself as one of the biggest games of all time and a true powerhouse when it comes to India. In that decade and a half, it's also been constantly updated with new content and features, and seems set to last forever with no sequel in sight.

While it looks like Mojang's version of Minecraft will always remain the same, it seems that the game's original creator, Notch, wanted to push things further and essentially make a sequel for it. The controversial former Minecraft figure announced less than a week ago that he was planning to develop what would essentially be Minecraft 2, but it looks like plans have already been pushed back.

Minecraft creator puts plans for spiritual sequel on ice

As reported by 80 Level, Notch recently announced on Twitter that he and his team at Bitshift Entertainment are no longer pursuing a Minecraft sequel and will instead focus on developing Levers and Chests. Notch said the turning point was “PC Gamer said it looked cool”.

Notch further elaborated on his choice to focus on Lever and Chests, with one fan replying to his tweet saying they felt “betrayed”. The Minecraft creator assured fans that a spiritual successor would be “far less fun” than Levers and Chests, noting that they're usually just sad nostalgia.

When asked if Minecraft 2 would still be a one day game, Notch said that fans would have to ask Microsoft about that. The result of the Twitter poll appears to be why the team isn't pursuing a follow-up, as Notch noted that if the results were significantly more “biased” toward the surrogate, they would have tried it.
