September 2024 is the end of an era for Nintendo

For the first time since September 2016, nintendo Direct has not hosted for the month of September. In August, there was a Nintendo Partner Expo and Indie World, but neither of those expos revolved around Nintendo's upcoming game lineup. As for why there wasn't one, it's anyone's guess – but it could range from not having anything to show for it, to the company being too busy behind the scenes with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 reveal set to take place before March. be 31, 2025.

That's not to say there won't be a Nintendo Direct before the end of the year, but for whatever reason, Nintendo can't host one in a month that has consistently kicked off a big show for the past 8 years. The last September Nintendo Direct was then in 2023, where Nintendo showed off games like the long-awaited remake. Paper Mario: Thousand Year DoorPrincess Peach show timeand the second wave of Splatoon 3 DLC, among many, many others.

In theory, Nintendo could release a Nintendo Direct on September 30th. This story will be updated then. However, it seems highly unlikely at this point. If Nintendo did, it would make it the last September Direct to take place to date, with the vast majority taking place in the middle of the month.

Traditionally, these Nintendo Directs are the last big show of the year for the Big N. There were instances of an Indie World, Mobile Direct, or Direct for Super Nintendo World yesterday, but not a first-person show. . Perhaps August's Indie World was supposed to make way for a bigger Nintendo Direct later this year, but that's pure speculation. All fans can do is wait for Nintendo to come forward and announce an event, if it happens this year. It seems unlikely that there won't be a major Nintendo Direct series this year, but that's officially uncharted territory.

The last September without a Nintendo Direct was in 2015, meaning this year's absence broke an eight-year streak of events. Of course, if Nintendo wasn't ready for one, it wouldn't make sense for the company to just tick off September like a box. Nintendo may even return to normal next year with a Direct in September 2025, but it will be more questionable than the last 8 years.

Of all the possible explanations, one of the more logical reasons is that Nintendo is going full steam ahead in preparing for the Nintendo Switch 2. Fans may be forgiving on this one, as many of the Switch 2 leaks look very promising. Time will tell, but at least this time in Nintendo history is over.
