Russian court keeps Frenchman accused of gathering military data in custody

MOSCOW: The Russian court decided on Thursday to remand French researcher Laurent Vinatier, who is accused of illegally collecting military information, in pre-trial detention until August 5, the press service of the Moscow courts said. Vinatier, an expert on the former Soviet Union with extensive experience in Russia, is accused of illegally obtaining sensitive Russian military information that could benefit foreign intelligence services. The crime carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
