ReFantazio and Persona Director are working on a new game

Key foods

  • The person behind Metaphor: ReFantazio, Katsura Hashino, is currently hard at work on a new title.
  • In a new interview, he said that he has “already started” work on a new title.
  • With games like Persona, Catherine, and Shin Megami Tensei, whatever Hashino eventually comes up with is sure to be a hit.

Metaphor: ReFantazio may have just been released — as in, almost two weeks ago — but its director is already hard at work developing a new game. And before you ask, no, it's not Persona 6.

What does the metaphor mean for personal and ultimate fantasy?

Final Fantasy has always been the king of JRPGs, but Atlus is preparing a challenger.

In an interview transcribed by GamesRadar, director Katsura Hashino revealed that his mind had shifted from metaphor to something entirely new. “Oh, I've already started,” he said, due to the fact that he “doesn't really think about what to do as a person.”

In Hashino, we trust

As for what the game could end up being, well, that's a bit more complicated. It's not Persona, for example, but whatever it ends up being, it will have fans as well as other game developers at the forefront. “I look at Atlus as a whole and think about what's best for our team to create right now,” he said. “First, I want the users to be happy, and as a result, I hope the company is happy as well.”

All of this comes naturally to Hashino, as he says, “I always do it this way.” And really, who are we to judge the author? Hoshino has delivered nothing but critically acclaimed gems since its debut in the mid-1990s. Metaphor aside, Hashino has had a hand in the likes of Shin Megami Tensei, Persona 3, Persona 4, Catherine, Persona 5, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.

Of course, Metaphor has done nothing but continue this highly successful video game franchise. As our Meg Pellicchio wrote in her review: “Metaphor: ReFantazio is a new high for Atlus. It takes what's great about Persona, refines it, and pulverizes it into an exciting fantasy setting with an incredible story and It features well-developed characters and a new combat system.” In other words, don't doubt Atlas or Hashino.
