- Fans have been trying to use the open source Doom 3 engine since 2011 to remake Prey (2006).
- Having been delisted only three years after its launch, the PC port wasn't supported for long, and so it's now a pain to run on modern hardware.
- This port, like dhewm3 before it, has been looking to be tweaked all these years.
Developed by Human Head Studios, Prey (2006) is a forgotten classic FPS that follows veteran Cherokee mechanic Domasi 'Tommy' Tawodi, who is abducted by aliens aboard a strange ship called the Sphere.
While the game was a commercial and critical success, the sequel was canceled and the original game was delisted from Steam just three years after its release. Bethesda bought the rights from 2K in 2009, but as of today, it is still not available on PC.
Fortunately, it's backwards compatible on Xbox.
Given that the original game was quickly shelved, after all these years, getting it to work on modern hardware requires a bit of tinkering. But fans are trying to make it more accessible. Since Prey (2006) was developed in Doom 3's IdTech 4 engine, they are remaking the game using the open source version shared in 2011 (known in the community as a “source port”). .
Fans have already done this with Doom 3 itself dubbed dhewm3. Before the BFG version was released, it ran the game better on modern operating systems, while also introducing native widescreen support, gamepad support, numerous bug fixes, improved sound, and 64-bit support. Kord, while compatible with existing versions of the game. fashions
Doing the same for Prey (2006) makes it work better on modern hardware out of the digital box with a lot less hassle.
The team is looking for volunteers
Project lead FriskTheFallenHuman admits that work is currently limited by their “lack of knowledge,” and so they hope to build a team of volunteers and make more sustainable progress by publishing what they have so far.
As Frisk explains on his GitHub page, there have been several attempts at a source port of Prey (2006) over the past decade, but none have made it to the finish line. This newly established project itself is “far from completion”. Therefore, volunteers are very important in making this dream come true in the long run.
You can download and play the alpha build right now, but as it stands, you can't beat the game. However, to avoid any legal issues with Bethesda, you need a copy of the original Prey (2006). While you are unlisted, you can still buy working CD keys online. Just don't be fooled by the $100 – you can find them for $2-$5.
