Istanbul: Turkey has asked its citizens in Lebanon to leave the country if they do not need to stay, as the security situation there is likely to deteriorate rapidly, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced late Sunday.
Tensions have risen since Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Palestinian group Hamas, was assassinated in Tehran on Wednesday, a day after an Israeli attack in Beirut killed Fouad Shakar, the top military commander of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
The ministry said in a statement that Lebanese Turks should be cautious and not visit Nabatieh, South Lebanon, Bekaa and Baalbek-Hormel provinces, unless necessary.
“Those who do not need to stay in Lebanon should, if possible, leave Lebanon while commercial flights are still operating,” the statement said.
Earlier on Sunday, France and Italy asked their citizens in Lebanon to leave the country due to the risk of escalation of military tension in the Middle East.
