Femicide in North Africa exposed but legal protection lags

ALGIERS: Femicide and domestic violence against women in North Africa are increasingly being reported online and in the media, but legal measures to protect victims are still lacking, rights groups say. At least one woman is murdered in Algeria every week, according to the watchdog Feminicides Algerie, which has been documenting murders since 2019. Across the border in Tunisia, the rate of femicides quadrupled between 2018 and 2023, reaching 25 murders, up from six in 2018. according to NGOs Aswat Nissa and Manara.
