We finally got a proper look at Borderlands 4 at The Game Awards. Given that Randy Pitchford couldn't contain his excitement, it wasn't much of a secret, but it was everything we expected. Shadowy art, tons of psychos, and, as Neo says, guns…lots of guns. However, something was missing from the full reveal trailer.

Borderlands 4 Can't Just Be More Borderlands
After a disastrous movie adaptation and three very similar games, Borderlands 4 is a chance to evolve.
The Borderlands series is known for its offbeat humor. And while it was passable in the first two games, players got tired of rolling their eyes by the time Borderlands 3 arrived. So, it's no surprise that the leaked trailer for Borderlands 4 doesn't include many silly jokes. This seems to be true for the entire game as well.
Shut up, Claptrap
In addition to what we saw in the trailer, we know that Borderlands 4 will be released sometime after April 2025. However, story director Sam Winkler recently revealed that the team plans to improve the quality of humor that the show has become known for. It's unlikely that the series will take a complete turn and ditch the comedy angle, but at least it's refined a bit.
As spotted by PC Gamer , when asked on Twitter about the rather serious tone of the trailer, Winkler replied: “I'm not at liberty to talk about the content of BL4, but I am adamant about BL3's excessive toilet humor. “
Explaining how he wanted to defuse the tension, Winkler said: “If the word skibidi is thrown in the game under my watch, I'll shed real tears. Paul Tassi joked that we'll have a rifle called the Hawk 2A and a co-developer. He asked me if it was real and I wanted to put my hand on the sink wheel.
This is good news for fans of the series. Borderlands 3 ended up being pretty disappointing, and the terrible humor made it even harder to keep playing. Of course, Claptrap will still be Claptrap, and the Psychos will still do their thing, but from what Winkler reveals, it looks like the jokes might come across a lot better this time around.
