Best School Anime

Bombing the trigonometry final, taking a dodgeball to the face, realizing one’s crush is infatuated with the quarterback — experiences like these can sour students towards school. Yet for all the stress that it can bring, school can be magical. It has its glorious moments: making friends, nailing classwork that once seemed impossible, and summoning the courage to step out on stage and be the best Hamlet that 200-person auditorium has ever seen. That makes it all worth it.

Whether elementary, high school, or college, the schools in these anime become breeding grounds for new experiences. They draw shy characters out of their shells, test the mettle of the bravest jocks, and once in a while even force fierce rivals to consider becoming friends.

Sports anime are going to be omitted.

Updated November 19, 2024, by Mark Sammut: The Fall 2024 season has plenty of school anime that are likely to keep people entertained, but there is not all that much to say about them beyond what was originally written when the quarter started. Consequently, two older series have been added to the main selection.

Best Fall 2024 School Anime

  • Dandadan Blue Box A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! Love Live! Superstar!! The Stories of Girls Who Couldn’t Be Magicians (2024)
    Release Date 2024-09-13 2024-10-08 2024-10-05
Genres Animation, Comedy, Action, Adventure, Fantasy Animation, Romance, Comedy Comedy Fantasy
    Studio Satelight J.C.Staff
    Streaming Service(s) Crunchyroll Crunchyroll

Fall 2024 is underway, and the season (naturally) features plenty of anime set in academies. While arguably not as common nowadays as fantasy worlds, schools will always be popular, especially for shonen and shojo stories. Summer 2024 had series like Wistoria, Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian, Makeine, and Pseudo Harem; its successor is not lacking options either.

Fall 2024 Anime Lineup: Where To Watch Every Series

The Fall 2024 anime lineup has plenty of massive shows, and they are split among Crunchyroll, HIDIVE, Netflix, Hulu, and more.

Let’s highlight a few of the “big” Fall 2024 school anime.

  • Dandadan – This recommendation is mostly fueled by Dandadan‘s popularity, rather than it being a definitive “school” anime. Even though Ken and Momo are students, most of the action will likely happen away from their school’s grounds, with the series focusing on supernatural and extraterrestrial investigations. Just to be clear, Dandadan is worth a watch by everyone.
  • Blue Box – A sports romance anime focusing on both genres, Blue Box tells the cute (and slow-building) love story between Chinatsu and Taiki. The students end up living together, all the while striving to make the nationals for their respective sports (basketball and badminton). Great animation and lovable characters make Blue Box a top candidate to be an all-time great sports, romance, and school anime. – Blue Box is included due to being just as much a romance as it is a sports anime.
  • A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! – While getting off to a fairly rough start, this quirky school comedy should provide a decent 20 minutes per week. Abe finds himself teaching a class filled with youkai, which catches him a bit off-guard. However, he soon realizes they are just like any other teenagers.
  • Love Live! Superstar!! Season 3 – Returning after a divisive season, Love Live! Superstar!! sends Kanon and friends into their last year in High School, giving them the final chance to win the Love Live! competition (again). To complicate matters, Margarete has now joined the school and has no intention of playing nice with the idol club’s members.
  • The Stories of Girls Who Couldn’t Be Magicians – Not everyone can become a magician, a fact Kurumi learns to her deep dissatisfaction. However, that does not mean these students cannot learn magic. Seemingly destined to not gather too much attention during Fall 2024, J.C.Staff’s anime has a warm and vibrant art style that complements the whimsical setting.

29 The Dangers in My Heart

A Boy And A Girl Meet In A School Library

Romance anime are fairly common, so newcomers must be truly special to stand out from the crowd. Ichikawa is a loner with some rather dark fantasies, most of which revolve around his popular classmate named Anna. However, one day, he stumbles across the model as she is eating in the library, a meeting that sets the stage for a beautiful friendship that eventually morphs into something more.

18 Classroom Of The Elite

A Cold, Calculating Main Character

Ayanokoji doesn’t have a care in the world. And yet, his cold disinterest in pretty much everything, combined with his genius intellect, turns him into a top contender at Koudo Ikusei Senior High School, without so much as breaking a sweat.

This prestigious Academy redefines the term “elite,” as it homes some of the wealthiest students in anime history (besides, perhaps the Kakegurui kids.) Ayanokoji and his fellow scholars are pitted against each other with the most random assortment of tests, that seems more focused on the youngsters’ manipulation abilities than actual academics (not that anyone’s complaining). With such staggering financial incentives, they certainly are a motivated bunch, and most characters are more than willing to stab a few backs along the way. Refreshingly, Ayanokoji is not an exception.

ReLIFE is a surprisingly sympathetic and heartfelt anime about trying to get things right, and while its premise could’ve easily gone astray, the writing keeps things mostly grounded throughout.

16 The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya

A Deep Story Under The Surface

His fascination is awoken again, however, by Haruhi, a classmate with a fixation on time travelers, aliens, and other otherworldly and supernatural figures. The two established a club called the SOS Brigade to investigate these strange phenomena.

Using the school club trope as a jumping-off point, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya actually has some pleasant twists that keep it from being more of the same old thing. The true identity of those around Kyon and Haruhi, as well as secrets about Haruhi herself, help build the show’s world in interesting directions.

After completing the series, make sure to watch

15 From Me To You

Wonderful Coming-Of-Age Story

15-year-old high school freshman Sawako Kuronuma has always struggled to make friends because she looks like the villainous Sadako from The Ring horror franchise. Others brand her with that cruel nickname and shy away from her, not giving the timid girl a chance to how sweet she is.

When Sawako meets Shouta, the most outgoing and popular boy in class, she is immediately drawn to his kindness and ability to be the center of attention. The romance that flourishes between the two is delicately and beautifully portrayed. From Me to You succeeds as much in its depiction of young love as it does with Sawako’s emotional evolution as she grows closer to other students in this exquisite slice-of-life anime.

2024’s third season is only available on Netflix.

The Powerful & The Silly

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. is a sketch-based comedy that originally started with 5-minute episodes before eventually being spliced together into more traditional chapters. While mostly sticking to a similar routine, the anime is constantly and reliably hilarious, with Saiki being one of the best straight characters in an anime comedy. 10 Sound! Euphonium

Making The Most Of A Limited Time

While sharing a few elements in common with the sports genre, Sound! Euphonium presents a more realistic depiction of a high school club than most shows. Kitauji High School used to be well-known as one of Japan’s best Band Club academies, but it has struggled in recent years to compete at the national level. Throughout three seasons and two movies, the anime chronicles Kumiko’s journey from a new student who is trying to find her voice as part of the Band Club to its president in her final year.

Even though Kumiko grounds most of the story, Sound! Euphonium is an ensemble piece with a broad vision, highlighting students who are pondering their future beyond high school and fresh-eyed newbies who will lead the club once the main characters depart. The story emphasizes and showcases how this period shapes a person’s social status, personality, and trajectory, all the while delivering great drama and classical music.
