NSW pubs, clubs and bars to stay open later for the Olympics

Pubs, clubs and bars are set to stay open until the early hours of the morning during the Olympics as a state's trading hours change.

Until 2024 Olympic venues are held in a new move by the NSW government, they can trade later than usual.

The decision will give more Olympic fans the chance to cheer on their favorite teams given the 8-hour time difference between Paris and Sydney.

Music and Nightlife Minister John Graham said all NSW pubs, clubs and bars were eligible for longer trading hours and did not need to apply separately to open for the Olympics.

“Olympic fever only comes around once every four years and as Australians we know that means late nights and sleepless nights to enjoy it,” he said.

“There's nothing like cheering on a gold medalist at home with friends and the community. The special event's extended deals support that – as well as an economic boost and more jobs on the night.

The move is also set to extend beyond the Olympics, with venues able to keep their doors open for “special cultural and sporting events” in a bid to boost the night-time economy. Gaming and Motor Racing Minister David Harris said he would like to use the new trading hours himself.

“The Olympics is the greatest show on earth and Australia is one of its most sports-friendly countries, so it's only fitting that NSW residents can come together in local venues to cheer on our athletes competing in these great events,” he said. said.

Long-term trading will allow our pubs, clubs and bars to benefit from the Games, while customers soak up the Olympic atmosphere.

“I look forward to joining the late night crowd to cheer on our Olympians in the coming weeks.”

Customers are encouraged to visit their local locations for specific business hours.

Victoria has also decided to get into the Olympic spirit, with Premier Jacinta Allen announcing on social media that the Olympics and Paralympics will be broadcast free of charge at Federation Square.

Victorians can gather at the iconic square between 12pm and 10pm between 27 July and 11 August throughout the Olympics and Paralympics.

Matildas matches will also be shown on the big screen, although free registration is required for matches on July 26, July 29 and August 1.
